Eutokia:
Eutokia is a Greek word that means ‘ happy childbirth’ and has been used as the name for a pioneering application of the Alexander Technique. Eutokia is the method which has been developed by Ilana Machover, which combines using the principles of the Alexander Technique with antenatal classes, along the lines of those run by the National Childbirth Trust.
Alexander teachers who also do the Eutokia training, enhance the traditional antenatal work by including the Alexander Technique in their teaching. They are also trained to be birth partners, or ‘Doulas’, who ‘mother the mothers’ and support the family before, during and after childbirth. The role of a doula is non-clinical and all medical input comes from the midwives and doctors.
